More than just a sweet floral smelling herb, lavender is one of the most popular and versatile essential oils for skin healing. With its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-septic properties, lavender essential oil can help reduce acne and blemishes, soothe, and calm the skin and heal cuts and scrapes. It is a true multi use plant as it also has antioxidant properties that benefit aging skin, and it contains compounds that repel insects.
Here at Nature’s Pond, lavender is a perfect fit with our other healing natives such as kawakawa, manuka, kanuka, and tarata. We incorporate lavender into our healing balm, baby balm, our insect repellent spray and balm, and most of our skin care products.
Lavender, or lavandula angustifolia, belongs to the mint family, and has had many surprising uses over its history - Romans used lavender oil in soaps and carried it with them throughout the roman empire, the ancient Greeks used lavender to fight insomnia and back aches, Queen Elizabeth used lavender as a perfume, and it was even used as an antiseptic in the First World War.
Here at Nature’s Pond, there are several reasons we include lavender in our products.
Prevents and heals acne and blemishes
Lavender oil has antibacterial properties that help eradicate acne-inducing bacteria and clogged pores. By unclogging pores and reducing inflammation lavender helps both prevent acne from developing and treat existing blemishes.
Soothes Inflammation
Lavender’s anti-inflammatory properties help soothe itchy skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. It also soothes and helps heal skin irritations like burns, insect bites and sunburn.
Wound Healing
Lavender’s anti-septic properties speed up wound healing, making it ideal for cuts, scrapes, and abrasions (this makes it a perfect addition to our healing balm!). For wounds that have already healed lavender can help reduce scarring.
Antioxidant properties
The antioxidant properties of lavender make it an ideal ingredient to add to skin care. Antioxidants protect against free radicals which lead to skin aging.
Repels bugs
Lavender oil is also an ingredient in our insect repellent spray and balm. Lavender contains a non-toxic compound called linalool, which is used in many pest control products. The distinct lavender scent repels mosquitoes, sandflies, spiders, ants, and fleas.
